About S o a p b o x Sessions
Since its start in May 2006, Soapbox Sessions has been the place where art, community, and everything in between have been coming together every week to turn practice into performance, to turn expression and awareness into a passion, to turn what were once only strangers at an open mic night into a family.
Created and hosted by Jason Brain, a young native of the San Fernando Valley, Soapbox Sessions has steadily grown from its simple beginnings of a borrowed sound system with a stage composed from a wood door situated on boxes, into what it is today, a weekly show displaying the talents of the local, and larger, community with a warmth and camaraderie not evident at many other venues.
Placed outside in nice weather, inside in not so nice weather,
the show continues on every Thursday without missing a beat, providing a
space and time for performers of all skills, ages, and experiences to do what
they love in hopes of 'spreading the word, spreading the love, and spreading the soap.' Built around the premise that an open mic night should be about collaboration, not cooperation, Soapbox Sessions has proven that with the right aura, the right outlook, and a somewhat decent stage, performers and audience alike will come back, week in and week out, to enjoy the company of each other and each's own expressions. A distinguishing feature of Soapbox Sessions is the original 'Soapbox Jambox,' a designated time each show where any interested performer can join in and create something completely new by coming together through music and words in a jam session. Truth be told, you never know what you're going to get, but that's the fun.
Although the show has gained success over the brief time it has been around (with recognition by the L.A. Times [Sept. 2006], The SFV News [Feb. 2008], and MishMashMagazine.com [July 2008], there is still much more that the show wants to accomplish in the future.
And with all that said, another show soon approaches and the only question left to ask is "Are you in?"
See you Thursday.
